More P133-M tax evasion case, filed vs Rappler's online news site

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) filed criminal charges in the Department of Justice (DOJ) earlier this morning against the online news site Rappler or Rappler Holding Corporation.

Rappler's unpaid tax will be P133.8 million in 2015 including income tax and value added tax.

In BIR records, Rappler failed to pay Income Tax Returns (ITR) and Value Added Tax (VAT) violations of sections 254 and 255 of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997.

The BIR case also involved the chief executive officer and president of Rappler Maria Ressa and treasurer of James Bitanga.

Those charged with the Certified Public Accountant Noel Baladiang of R. Manabat and Co., were violated Section 257 of the Tax Code.

Baladiang signed and certified the financial statement of the online news site despite the company's ommission and misstatement in their income.
